Fetal Neurosonogram
The fetal neurosonogram is an ultrasound technique which is an advanced diagnostic study so as to observe the growth and development of the central nervous system (CNS) inside the womb. Colloquially, it gives a complete assessment of the fetal brain. When an abnormality or any other issue is identified during a standard ultrasound, it becomes absolutely essential as it equips fetal

Frequently Asked Question
The scan is typically performed between 18 and 40 weeks of pregnancy, depending on your baby's growth and previous scan results. Based on clinical indications, our experts at Dr. Jasmine's fetal medicine & fetal interventions Centre will recommend the most suitable time whether in the second trimester or later in the third trimester to ensure a comprehensive and accurate evaluation.
During the procedure, a water-based gel is applied to your abdomen, and a high-resolution ultrasound probe is used to capture detailed images. For improved clarity, a transvaginal probe may be used. If the baby's head is positioned higher, you may be asked to sit and lean forward for an abdominal scan. Our centre is equipped with the latest technology that allows us to produce highly detailed 2D and 3D images of your baby’s brain often with resolution superior to that of MRI scans.
We recommend you empty your bladder 90 minutes before your scheduled scan. Then, about one hour before your appointment, drink a sufficient amount of water, milk, or coffee to ensure a full bladder, which is essential for optimal imaging during the ultrasound.
Dr. Jasmine Lall, a trusted name in fetal care with over 10 years of dedicated experience and performs the scans. Known for her precision, empathy, and professional approach, she ensures that each scan is not only thorough and accurate but also a reassuring experience for the expecting parents. She takes the time to explain every finding in detail and offers guidance or counseling when needed, making sure you feel informed and supported at every step.
This scan provides valuable insights into your baby’s brain and spinal development. Serious but rare abnormalities like dorsal or rhombencephalic induction defects can sometimes be detected as early as the first trimester. At our centre, special attention is given to early brain development to identify issues at the earliest stage possible. The scan also includes key measurements such as atrial width, transverse cerebellar diameter, biparietal diameter (BPD), and head circumference (HC) to evaluate overall fetal growth. In some cases, abnormalities related to brain tissue formation or proliferation can also be identified.
The procedure usually takes between 45 to 60 minutes, depending on the baby's position and the clarity of the images required. We aim to make the entire process smooth and as comfortable as possible for the patient.
Absolutely. The scan uses low-frequency ultrasound waves, which are non-invasive and completely safe for both the mother and the baby. These sound waves gently pass through the body to create clear images without any known side effects, making the procedure a reliable and risk-free method of fetal evaluation.
While ultrasound is a safe and effective diagnostic tool, it does have certain limitations. It cannot accurately image air-filled organs such as the stomach, intestines, or lungs, as sound waves do not travel well through air or gas. As a result, structures like the pancreas or aorta may require other imaging modalities for detailed evaluation. Ultrasound also cannot penetrate bone, so it only shows the outer surface. Additionally, in overweight or obese patients, image clarity may be reduced due to the difficulty of sound waves passing through dense tissue.
